PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Whole School Development (WSD)
The WST supports Sosebenza Community
School to ensure that learners from Grades 1 through 9 are
provided with opportunities for a holistic education of a
high standard.
The Department of Education provides
little financial assistance to the School and the WST thus
subsidizes the School’s transport, communication, resource,
material and maintenance requirements. Well-stocked book and
toy libraries are for example managed by the Trust –
resources essential to the provision of a quality education.
In terms of Curriculum support the WST
provides learners with additional input in terms of English
Language Development, Arts and Crafts and Sexuality
Education. Working in conjunction with the Language
Education Departments at the Universities of Port Elizabeth
and Edinburgh, the WST is also participating in a 10-year
research project to prove the positive effects of a truly
Additive Bilingual Language Policy for learners’ language
proficiency (isiXhosa + English), cognitive development and
academic achievement. The Project is currently in its 4th
year of implementation.
The School also receives support from the
WST as it strives to develop Extra Curricular activities for
learners. The WST provides facilities, equipment and
transport enabling learners to participate in sport, music
and drama.
Integrated into the WSD Project is a
program for Staff Development. Educators participate in
workshops to address their professional needs, while WST
staff are always available to provide day-to-day guidance
and assistance in terms of classroom practices and the
administrative, financial and management practices necessary
for the effective governance of the School.
